Types of Chimneys

There are two main types of Chimneys.  There are more, but they're not really relevant to the UK market, being of a structural design to withstand earthquakes and similar geological stresses.

Predominantly in the UK, you will find brick-built chimneys, usually called masonry chimneys.  I use the term 'brick' loosely - to mean stone, concrete blocks or housebricks.

The alternative to the traditional masonry chimney is the factory-built style, which are perhaps less visually appealing, but are far easier to manufacture and fit, being made of metal and looking like pipework.

Besides the Aesthetics of the chimney, you need to take into consideration the types of fuel that are to be burnt in your heat source (fire place, gas boiler, coal-fired heating, Aga, etc. ) .  The only way you will know exactly what type of chimney flue you need for your appliance is to check the paperwork that comes with it.
